Glaucoma: It Can Take Your Sight Away

Harrisburg, PA -- Glaucoma can affect anyone, from newborn babies to senior citizens. Millions of people in the United States and throughout the world suffer from Glaucoma. The most effective way to prevent vision loss is by having regular eye examinations. The Tri-County Association for the Blind, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind and its member agencies has proclaimed Thanksgiving Week, November 22nd through 26th, 2004 as "Thanks for Sight Week."

Glaucoma occurs when there is increased pressure within the eye. This pressure is caused by an accumulation of fluid, which circulates in the eye, bathing and nourishing the cornea and lens. The pressure results in the restriction of blood flow to the optic nerve, thus damaging its ability to function, causing loss of vision. Some symptoms of glaucoma are 1) difficulty focusing when entering a theater or other dark room, 2) loss of side vision, 3) blurred or foggy vision, 4) a halo or rainbow around lights or 5) the frequent need to change glasses.

Glaucoma is often referred to as the sneak thief of vision, since symptoms often go unnoticed by the individual. There are certain individuals who may be at a greater risk of developing Glaucoma including:

• Individuals over the age of 45
• Those who have a family history of Glaucoma
• Anyone with abnormally high intraocular pressure
• Individuals of African-American or Asian-American descent
• People who have diabetes, severe myopia (nearsightedness) or those with high blood pressure
